Recovering files from a crashed computer

Introduction
Sometimes you may encounter a blue screen of death that prevents you from logging into your computer. Generally, this means there is a problem with your operating system, but the bios is still operational. To circumvent this problem, you can boot a different operating system to view the files.

Preparation
Supplies Needed
1. External hard drive or flashdrive
2. Linux cd (burn the iso to a cd on a different computer)

Instructions
Step 1: Insert cd and start computer (you may need to configure your bios to boot your cd drive first
Step 2: Choose to start Ubuntu without making any changes
Step 3: After desktop loads, click “Places” in the menu on the top left hand corner of the screen and select “Home Folder” from the drop down menu
Step 4: On the left hand side find the hard drive (will look like a disk) that isn’t called “File system”. This is your hard drive.
Step 5: Transfer your files to your external or flashdrive.
Step 6 (optional): Reinstall Windows or repair computer.

Works on: xp, vista (Theoretically, this should work on any windows computer. Send me a message, if this works for you on a different OS.)
