RSS Feeds are really useful ways to gather information about sites and the latest news updates. The most efficient way to read rss feeds is by using a reader (ie. google reader) which allow you to organize several feeds in one interface. In a rss reader, you can enter the rss feed url manually to subscriber, but web browsers also have extensions which allow you to easily subscribe to an rss feed.
Instructions
On Chrome you have to install the RSS Subscription Extension. Step 1: If the site you wish to receive news from has an rss icon in the right hand side of the url box you can click it to subscribe.
Step 2: Select the reader you want to subscribe with. In this tutorial I am using Google Reader. Step 3: Click the subscribe button inside the reader interface.
Customization
The feeds you subscribe to appear in the left hand side. If you click or mouse over a specific feed an arrow appears on the right hand side of the feed that you can click for more options.
- Sorting Options
- Unsubscribe
- Rename
- Add to folder
On the top right hand corner of the reader you have the option to view the feeds in Expanded or List view. It may be helpful to use List view so you can quickly scan the articles for the ones you are interested in. When you find one you're interested in you can either click the article to see the article in the reader or the two arrows on the right side of the article entry to view the article on its respective website.
Lastly you will probably not read every single article you see, so it may be a good idea to press the "Mark all as read" button after your read all the articles you are interested in.
Make your own feed with google alerts
You can use google alerts to create your own feed. Look at this google searching guide for information to make advanced searching queries.
1. Change the "Deliver to" option to "Feed". This will essentially produce a feed that will update real-time to show everything google caches related to your search query.
2. Click the "Create Alert" button
3. Click "View in Google Reader"
